Data & finance skills for India, free

The Python, SQL, pandas and machine-learning skills that India's data and finance employers actually hire for - learned free, in your browser, with nothing to install and no signup for lessons. Below: what the roles pay (approximate LPA bands), who is hiring, and how the free tracks map to each job.

Job-relevant

built on real market and business data, the way employers use it

The roles, and what they pay in India

Approximate ranges as of 2026, in lakhs per annum (LPA). Pay varies a lot by city, employer type, college tier and skills; aggregator sources differ, so treat these as directional, not offers.

Data Analyst

entry ₹3.5–6 LPA · 5+ yrs ₹9–16 LPA

Pull data with SQL, clean and summarise it in Python/pandas, and answer business questions with charts.

up to ₹18–25 LPA at top firms

Build it free: SQL + Python + pandas

Data Scientist

entry ₹6–12 LPA · 5+ yrs ₹18–30 LPA

Build and evaluate predictive models: feature engineering, validation, and honest metrics.

IIT/NIT grads at product firms start ₹12–20 LPA; leads 40+ LPA

Business Analyst

entry ₹4–7 LPA · 5+ yrs ₹10–20 LPA

Turn business needs into metrics and dashboards; SQL, reporting and stakeholder work.

the title spans IT and analytics roles, so pay varies widely

Build it free: SQL Foundations

Financial Analyst

entry ₹3–5 LPA · 5+ yrs ₹6–12 LPA

Analyse company and market data, build models, and support investment or planning decisions.

CFA/FRM holders and banking/consulting roles reach ₹10–20 LPA

Quantitative Analyst

Model markets and risk: backtesting, statistics, and portfolio mathematics.

elite HFT firms are a separate tier - see below

Build it free: ML + Finance SQL

The elite HFT tier is real but tiny. A handful of high-frequency and proprietary-trading firms reportedly offer fresh-graduate packages from around ₹30 lakh to ₹1 crore-plus (total CTC, bonus-heavy). These cover very few firms and hires, are extremely selective, and the numbers come from community reports, not audited data. Aim for the skills; treat that tier as a long shot, not a plan.

Who is hiring

Global bank & fund back offices (GCCs)

India hosts 2,100+ Global Capability Centres employing about 2.36 million people (Nasscom-Zinnov, 2026), and banking/financial services is the single largest vertical. These are the biggest hirers of data + finance talent.

IT services, consulting & the Big 4

The traditional entry path. Note the honest caveat: the big IT firms have been flattening headcount with automation and AI, while GCCs and product firms grow.

Quant & high-frequency trading

A small, extremely selective, very well-paid segment, clustered in Gurugram/NCR, Mumbai and the emerging GIFT City hub. Many recruit fresh graduates from the IITs, no prior finance needed.

The Indian market, in brief

India's two main exchanges are the NSE (Mumbai, 1994 - the world's largest derivatives exchange by number of contracts) and the BSE (1875, Asia's oldest). Their benchmark indices are the Nifty 50 (NSE, 50 large-caps) and the Sensex (BSE, 30 companies). Securities markets are regulated by SEBI, and the central bank is the RBI. GIFT City in Gujarat is India's designated International Financial Services Centre and a fast-growing hub for trading and quant firms. The techniques in these lessons apply directly to this data.

Certifications that matter

Coding skills complement these; they do not replace them. Here is what each one is.

NISM

India, some mandatory

The National Institute of Securities Markets, set up by SEBI. Some roles legally require a NISM certification (for example the Research Analyst exam, Series XV) to work in India.

NCFM / NSE Academy

India, voluntary

Online market-certification modules from the NSE (now NAL Academy). Industry-recognised but not a legal requirement.

CFA

Global

The Chartered Financial Analyst charter from the US-based CFA Institute: three exam levels plus work experience, portable across 160+ markets.

FRM

Global

The Financial Risk Manager credential from GARP: two exams plus two years of experience, the standard for risk roles.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really free?

Yes. Every lesson runs in your browser, with no fee and no signup needed to learn. Python and SQL execute on your own machine, so there is nothing to buy or subscribe to.

Do I need a degree from an IIT?

No, not for most data-analyst, BI and analytics roles - a solid portfolio and demonstrable SQL/Python skills matter more than the college name. The elite high-frequency-trading tier is highly selective and IIT-heavy, but that is a small slice of the market, not the whole of it.

Will this run on a low-end laptop?

Yes. Because the code runs in the browser with nothing to install, it works on modest hardware and patchy setups - one of the reasons a browser-based approach fits India well.

Which cities have the most data and finance jobs?

Bengaluru (the largest tech hub), Hyderabad, Pune, Chennai and the Delhi-NCR cluster (Gurugram and Noida) for data; Mumbai for finance and markets; and Gurugram, Mumbai and GIFT City for quant and trading.

Python or SQL first?

SQL first. It is the single most requested skill in data job posts and the fastest route to a first hire-able skill. Then add Python and pandas, then machine learning.

Do I need a paid certification?

Not to learn or to build a portfolio. Some regulated roles legally require a NISM certification (SEBI); CFA and FRM help for finance and risk careers but are optional and separate from your coding skills.

Can I practise on Indian market data (Nifty, Sensex)?

The lessons teach the same techniques you would apply to NSE or BSE data - moving averages, returns, joins across price and fundamentals - so you can practise them on Nifty 50 or Sensex data yourself once the mechanics click.
